Finding Joy in the Tiny Things

One of the greatest gifts in my life is a friendship that began in the first grade and has lasted through every season life has brought our way. My best friend, Nancy Vinall, is one of the strongest, most resilient, and creative people I know, and today I want to share both her story and the beautiful artwork that has become such an important part of her journey.

One of the goals of The Collective is to shine a light on people who inspire us to chase the things that bring us joy, especially when the path isn't easy. Nancy embodies that spirit perfectly.

For years, Nancy dedicated herself to raising her three children alongside her kick-ass husband, Sam, while also serving as an elementary educator for more than 15 years. Like so many women, she poured herself into caring for others, often putting her own interests and passions on the back burner.

But life also handed her challenges she never expected.

Severe neck problems caused by compressed discs led to nerve damage, limited mobility, and significant ongoing pain. Multiple surgeries became necessary to restore function and prevent further damage. Later, she faced another debilitating diagnosis: Lyme disease, which manifested with painful inflammation and joint issues in her hands.

For someone whose hands would eventually become her creative tools, that diagnosis could have been especially discouraging.

Then, during a trip to Scotland, Nancy discovered a tiny ceramic home in a small shop that captured her imagination. Something about it sparked a curiosity she couldn't shake. What seemed like a simple souvenir would ultimately become the inspiration for a new passion and an unexpected source of healing.

After returning home, she began teaching herself the art of hand sculpting ceramic tiny homes. What started as a hobby soon became a creative calling.

The process is therapeutic in more ways than one. The physical act of molding clay helps keep her hands moving despite the discomfort Lyme disease can bring. The creativity required to design each tiny home...the colors, textures, doors, windows, flowers, and whimsical details—provides an outlet that is both mentally restorative and deeply fulfilling.

Each tiny home is handcrafted, filled with personality, and inspired by the comfort, memories, and stories that make that tiny home feel very personal.

As their youngest child prepares to leave for college this fall, Nancy and Sam are stepping into a new chapter as empty nesters. Rather than seeing it as an ending, Nancy has embraced it as an opportunity to invest even more deeply in something that brings her joy.
